push (email, push notifications, posts) is bad. it will forever have the spam problem
part of why it's really hard to retvrn to email for things like discord > listservs, instagram posts for shows/events > mailing lists, is that people don't read their email because it's full of spam
and that doesn't even start to broach the topic of how running our own DIY email infrastructure is basically impossible because port 25 is blocked everywhere...because of spam, and when you manage to get port 25 open and send emails on it you have to go to incredible lengths to get those emails into people's inboxes...because of spam.
i think that port 25 is dead (long live port 25)
some people will say to this "ah yes these are real problems and that's why we need communication systems where everyone gives out revokable, one-time identifiers to each other rather than a permanent unique identifier like an email address" and yes, this would fix it!
but for things that are public, like event announcements and newsletters and almost-the-entire-social-media-ecosystem...fuck push! we should pull!
i want to live in a world where everyone has a feed reader that doesn't look like any feed reader i've seen before that is PULLing updates and displaying them to the user in a way that feels like emails, push notifications, or instagram event posts
