an asheville city official cries at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the improved north fork dam spillway in 2021.

three years later, during hurricane helene, this spillway would prevent:

1) a human from having to make the decision to manually open the floodgates and destroy many homes and lives by their action

2) the dam from overtopping and likely failing, which would destroy almost all of swannanoa and biltmore village

i didn't even know how a damn worked in 2021. i vaguely knew that there was a reservoir in that location but had no understanding of its history or importance (80% of asheville's drinking water comes from it). these city officials did a huge, complicated, expensive, and *incredibly* important project that most people didn't understand or even know about. and just three years later it would go on to save so many lives.

i'm frequently unhappy with our local government. but videos like this, buried in the annals of youtube with just a few hundred views, help me counterbalance those frustrations.

every time i'm horrified by what has become of the internet, i remind myself that the first message sent over a long distance telegraph line in the US read "WHAT HATH GOD WROUGHT"

i yolo-migrated a bunch of domains from namecheap to njalla -- i've used njalla for a while and ultimately i'm glad i did it, but i also caused myself a bunch of pain and suffering and (hopefully temporary) email deliverability issues

njalla will act like it has fetched the DNS records on its own, but if you look closely you will see that *it has not*.

you need to pull down your zonefile before migrating using whatever certainly-cursed strategy your previous registrar provides for that, and then recreate all the records in njalla ASAP

push (email, push notifications, posts) is bad. it will forever have the spam problem

part of why it's really hard to retvrn to email for things like discord > listservs, instagram posts for shows/events > mailing lists, is that people don't read their email because it's full of spam

and that doesn't even start to broach the topic of how running our own DIY email infrastructure is basically impossible because port 25 is blocked everywhere...because of spam, and when you manage to get port 25 open and send emails on it you have to go to incredible lengths to get those emails into people's inboxes...because of spam.

i think that port 25 is dead (long live port 25)

some people will say to this "ah yes these are real problems and that's why we need communication systems where everyone gives out revokable, one-time identifiers to each other rather than a permanent unique identifier like an email address" and yes, this would fix it!

but for things that are public, like event announcements and newsletters and almost-the-entire-social-media-ecosystem...fuck push! we should pull!

i want to live in a world where everyone has a feed reader that doesn't look like any feed reader i've seen before that is PULLing updates and displaying them to the user in a way that feels like emails, push notifications, or instagram event posts

they don't have to share it, it's all already public, which is horrible: https://vt.ncsbe.gov/RegLkup/

just the most appalling meta thread i've ever seen on lobsters. i don't blame the mods/hosts of lobsters, i blame the tech industry itself. i feel very vindicated in my decision to delete my account a few months ago

the tech industry is populated by a frightening proportion of absolutely wretched people whose motivations and goals are aligned with the accelerationist and society-wrending goals of large tech companies themselves

as a result, i don't think that any online forum about computers or programming can be "safe" (for minoritized people) or "good" (politically) without being *openly hostile* to the tech industry itself and the people who populate it

migrating a miniflux instance is so easy! just pg_dump and psql -X, no datadir, copy the miniflux.conf, boom that's it

rss is OP, miniflux is OP, so good
